TOURISM IN NORMANDY: what to do in the Manche and Cotentin regions?

Are you planning a camping holiday in Normandy? The Cotentin, in La Manche, offers its visitors a wide range of activities for all tastes. In the heart of the bocage, a few minutes from the Normandy beaches, the 4-star L'Étang des Haizes campsite welcomes you to the west coast of the Cotentin, a small corner of Normandy where the landscapes are steeped in history and culture.

The Channel peninsula, an invigorating and charming destination

Looking for a change of scenery? The Channel peninsula, surrounded by the sea, is a real paradise for water sports enthusiasts. From Granville in the south to Carteret in the north, there are eight harbours along the west coast of the department. The fine sandy beaches attract sand yachts, paddle boats, kayaks, sailing, surfing, kitesurfing and wingfoil enthusiasts of all levels. Sea fishing enthusiasts will also find plenty to do here, with opportunities to fish for sea bass, sole and sea bream.

Boat trips and sea excursions are also popular to discover the Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Herm and Sark) from the pretty seaside resort of Barneville-Carteret. Further afield, on the east coast of the Cotentin, the island of Tatihou is also worth a visit. You can get there from the quay at Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue by taking an amphibious boat with wheels, which goes on land and sea. Take a trip to Port Racine to discover the smallest port in France. Further east, you should also visit Barfleur, the smallest commune in the department. Labelled "Most beautiful village in France", it is also a fishing port renowned for its open sea mussels.

The Cotentin, a hidden gem of Normandy

From east to west, from Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue to Barfleur, via the north coast and Cherbourg, up to Port-Bail, opposite Jersey, the Cotentin fulfils all our desires: nature, culture, heritage and gastronomy. Head for the Cotentin peninsula, nicknamed Little Ireland. It is an ideal playground for hikers, cyclists and horse riders, with many marked trails to explore the Cotentin peninsula. In the heart of the Caen / Mont-Saint-Michel / Cherbourg triangle, the Cotentin Marshes Regional Nature Park is a unique site for observing migratory birds in Normandy, alternating between marshes, meadows, hedgerows and moors. Back on the coast, the GR 223 allows you to discover the Cotentin coastline as far as Mont-Saint-Michel (Manche), where it meets the GR 34.

A strong link between history and nature in Normandy

La Manche is also a country rich in history and architectural heritage, making it an ideal destination for those who enjoy cultural and learning holidays. The Cotentin towns of Cherbourg and Sainte-Mère-Eglise are home to many D-Day museums and historical monuments that bear witness to the strategic importance of Normandy during the Second World War.

In Cherbourg, discover the Cité de la Mer, an open-air museum dedicated to the history of the sea and man. You will discover the submarine Le Redoutable, the largest visitable submarine in the world. Granville is also worth a visit. The "Monaco of the North" is known for its Art Deco architecture and its past as a fishing port. Visitors can also visit the Christian-Dior museum, housed in the house where the famous French fashion designer grew up. Finally, a camping holiday in the Manche would not be complete without a visit to Mont-Saint-Michel and its famous abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Classified as one of the most beautiful bays in the world, the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel is the scene of the highest tides in continental Europe. A spectacle not to be missed!
